The Town of Standford was formed in 1793 from the Town of Washington. The Town celebrated its bicentennial in 1993. The Town's 50 square miles include the beautiful foothills of the Fishkill Range. The linear hamlet of Standfordville was a railroad center in the 19th century. The other two hamlets are Hunn's Lake and Bangall. Farming has been the major industry ever since the 18th century. In the 19th century streams powered a number of small mills processing and producing a variety of products for local use or sale. From the turn of the 20th century tourism contributed to the economy. Until WW ll many farms encouraged summer boarders as a way of adding to income. Hunn's Lake was a popular vacation spot featuring a dance hall and boarding houses. Its natural beauty became a new foundation for attracting tourism to the areas wineries, farm markets and ranches. The Chauncey Stillman Estate "Wethersfield" opened its grounds and art collection to the public in the 1990's.
The Stanford area is the perfect destination for anyone looking for peace and tranquility. There are rolling fields, dense forests, lakes and small hamlets with historical buildings.
The Town is only about 90 minutes from New York City and is easily accessible via the Taconic State Parkway.
Educational Facilities
The Town is served by the Pine Plains Central School District with a small portion being in the Webatuck Central School District and the Rhinebeck Central School District.
The district has the largest special education library in the country.
The school district maintains full activity and interscholastic sports programs. Music, art and physical education instruction is provided at all levels. Students score among the top percentile in State and National tests. The Middle School placed 1st in Competition for Odyssey of the Mind.
Recreational Facilities
Nearby Wilcox Park has 615 acres of woods, fields and a lake with a beach. There are many hiking/nature trails where one can also cross-country ski. There are large picnic and camping areas and many interesting and unique experiences within a short distance. Enjoy the local wineries, berry and apple picking,golfing,horseback riding,hiking and antiquing.
