Village of Tivoli

Distance to NYC: 100 miles
Area: 1.27 square miles

The Village of Tivoli is a small unique community tucked away in the northwest corner of Dutchess County on the shores of the majestic Hudson River. The first settlement occurred after a parcel was acquired in 1731 by Captain Nicholas Hoffman. After the Revolutionary War, several large estates were created along the Hudson River by the Livingston family. Tivoli was originally called Upper Red Hook Landing. From its beginning in the 18th century, the village was a bustling riverside operation. Actually, two villages developed within the area; one was a river landing,Tivoli, the other,Madalin, was further inland. These two separate communities merged in 1872 to form the Village of Tivoli. Formerly Red Hook Landing, the Village was given its present name after beautiful Tivoli,Italy,by Pierre de Labigarre, a Frenchman, attempting to establish the "perfect community."

Today, the Village of Tivoli has a commitment to preserving the character, history and heritage of the Village. Entirely within the borders of the Town of Red Hook, the Village is bordered to the north by Clermont State Park, to the west by the Hudson River and to the south by Tivoli Bays, a National Estuarine Preserve and Bard College. Tivoli, just forty miles south of New York’s Capital, Albany, and one hundred miles north of the business and cultural center, New York City, is the second smallest municipality in the county. It is easily accessible from the Taconic Parkway, NY State Thruway and Amtrak.

Educational Facilities
Tivoli is located within the Red Hook Central School District, and is rated as one of the finest public school systems in the Hudson Valley. The system consists of three schools:

The Mill Road Elementary School, Linden Avenue Middle School and the Senior High School. The Kattsban International Dance Center, situated on 153 pastoral acres along the Hudson offers world class dance and theater.

Bard College is nearby and offers co-educational fouryear liberal arts.

Recreational Facilities
Tivoli’s Recreation Park is host for many community activities. Newer additions to the attractions are Poet’s Walk Park with hiking trails, outstanding Hudson River views and the scenic Tivoli Bays National Estuarine Reserve.

Nearby, there are State and County parks with boating, swimming, picnicking, fishing and golf facilities.

Houses of Worship
Include St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Saint Sylvia’s Roman Catholic Church. There is also access to most denominations nearby.
