Town of Northeast

Distance to NYC: 102 miles
Area: 43.95 square miles

The Town of Northeast is in the Harlem Valley. It was established in 1788 and is one of Dutchess County's earliest towns. Its boundaries were drawn by the Oblong Treaty with Connecticut (1731), which resulted in the "chimney," part of a 2X40 mile eastern strip that was ceded to NYS. The town was named for its geographical location in the northeast corner of Dutchess County. Links to New England were via an 18th century turnpike connecting mines in the northeast and in the Berkshires to Hudson River Transport. Fertile valleys made agriculture the prime industry for many years. Sometime after 1850 the Village of Millerton in the town became a major railroad junction for three northeastern lines. Although farming is still the major industry, the area is being rediscovered by visitors who come for its beauty, history and cultural climate. The Taconic Tri-State Park in the chimney is a popular attraction. The Village of Millerton was incorporated in 1875 and is the main population center. Millerton is named for Sidney Miller who helped layout the Harlem Railroad. Only 90 minutes north of Manhattan, the area is easily accessible by rail or car.
