The Town of Milan is a rural community located at the northern edge of Dutchess County. The land was originally part of a tract of land owned by the Little Nine Partners and was formally incorporated as a township in 1818 from the Town of Northeast. The town is comprised of 36 square miles. It is one of the most rural and least populated towns in Dutchess County. There are many beautiful roads and scenic views. As the town grew in the nineteenth century a number of hamlets developed. They were located in various parts of the town and included: Rock City, Lafayetteville, Milanville, Jackson Corners, Shookville, Thorndale, Enterprise and Maplehurst. Most hamlets had a general store, blacksmith and some had a post office, gristmill, sawmill and schoolhouse. Some of the original schoolhouses and hamlet business buildings survive today as residences.
The Town of Milan is home to Battenfeld's Anemone and Christmas Tree Farm. They are the largest grower of distinctive hybrid anemones, shipping all over the world. Down through the years the farm has become a regional attraction for residents and visitors to the area.
The town is easily accessible from the Taconic State Parkway.
Educational Facilities
The Town of Milan is divided into three school districts: Red Hook Central School District (Northwest Milan), Pine Plains School District (eastern Milan), and Rhinebeck Central School District (southwest Milan).
The Hudson Valley Raptor Center is dedicated to the care and rehabilitation for birds of prey. The center is open to the public and offers informative educational programs to people of all ages, ranging from pre-school to seniors.
Recreational Facilities
The Town of Milan Recreation Park is dedicated to providing residents with recreational fun for all ages. The park hosts Little League, and Adult League baseball. One of the popular events is the annual Milan Community Day. The Red Hook Golf Course is close by and offers fine dining and a scenic 18-hole course. Carvel Country Club, a popular 18-hole course, is just off the TSP. There is a private rod and gun club located on Enterprise Road. Wilcox Park offers a lake for boating and fishing, playing fields and trails for hiking and cross country skiing.
Houses of Worship
