The Town of Clinton was named in honor of George Clinton, Governor of New York, during the Revolutionary War. It became a town in 1788 and was reduced in size in 1821 when Hyde Park and Pleasant Valley were formed from it. The town contains four buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, one of which is the Upton Lake Grange (constructed by Quakers in 1777 as the Creek Meeting House).
There are six hamlets within the town: Clinton Corners, Clinton Hollow, Schultzville, Pleasant Plains, Hibernia and Bullshead. The historic Villages of Rhinebeck and Hyde Park are close by for everyday conveniences.
The area is very desirable for its rural beauty, quiet country roads, rolling fields, and wooded trails. The town is easily accessible with the Taconic State Parkway on the western boundary.
Educational Facilities
The town residents are served by four school districts: Rhinebeck Central Schools, Hyde Park Central Schools, Millbrook Central Schools and Pine Plains Central Schools.

The Upton Lake Christian School is a private school serving the area.
Recreational Facilities
There are several lakes in the area offering swimming, boating, picnicking and fishing. The many horse farms in the area have private lessons, boarding and miles of trails through the countryside.
Houses of Worship
